The Healing Process for Micropigmentation - your go-to guide
Ah, the healing journey after micropigmentation – it's like navigating through a maze of options, isn't it? Dry heal? Wet heal? Balm or cream? Let's unravel this together!
First off, let's take a look into how our skin bounces back after micropigmentation.
The stages of healing:
• Inflammation: Picture the body's healing army rushing to the scene with capillaries swelling, and white blood cells doing their job of repair, causing a delightful redness and swelling.
• Homeostasis: Now, the blood vessels start cozying up, forming a protective layer over the wound. Think of it as nature's way of saying, "Time to patch things up!"
• Proliferation: Now comes the rebuilding, laying down new skin fibers and capillaries like a construction site. Cue the scab formation and collagen rebuild!
• Maturation: The grand finale! Collagen gets snugly packed and smoothed out, turning the wound site into a fortress of strength. It's like a makeover, but for your skin!
Now, let's discuss skin types:
• Dry: The desert dwellers of skin, often feeling tight and parched, with flaky patches and minimal pores.
• Normal: Blessed with even tone, small pores, and a balanced oil production. Ah, the joys of a normal skin types!
• Oily: The greasy gurus, boasting large pores, shine galore, and a knack for producing excess oil.
• Combination: The juggling act of skin, with dry cheeks and an oily T-zone.
Well we must remember there is no exact answer when working with a living organism…
Sometimes wounds can become infected and sometimes the pigment doesn’t hold as we expect. We rely on our experience to help guide us when giving advice to our clients/patients and sometimes it’s not always the outcome we have anticipated.
Remember, this doesn't mean you were wrong, it just means you are working on a living organism which can be unpredictable, and no one can tell exactly what's going to happen!
So aftercare, what is best?
Well, this will be different for each skin type. A dry skin type has the least beneficial natural healing process so the wound site needs moisture to heal proficiently. An oily skin type on the other hand has the advantage of decreasing the chance of the skin becoming dry, so is more proficient at healing!
Moist wound healing helps epithelialisation and blood vessel production, here's an extract from some research I read recently:
“A moist environment has been proven to facilitate the healing process of the wound by preventing dehydration and enhancing angiogenesis and collagen synthesis together with increased breakdown of dead tissue and fibrin. This improves the aesthetics of the wound, while decreasing pain. The moist environment has not been shown to increase the risk of infection, as compared to traditional dry therapies.” Link to article

Areola Aftercare:
Upon returning home, if your client/patient has a dressing covering the treated area, kindly advise them to remove it as soon as possible. Should they notice any lymphatic fluid or blood, a gentle cleaning with PURE4® is recommended, followed by an additional spray and allow to dry.
To prevent pigment from rubbing against clothing, suggest they place dry gauze in their bra.
The morning after the treatment, they may shower, preferably with their back to the water jets to avoid direct contact with the treated area. Using gauze, they should gently blot dry the treated area. If they opt for a bath after day 2, advise against soaking in bathwater or using any bath products, opting instead for a gentle blotting dry with gauze and spray PURE4®.
For the initial healing period, it's best to avoid swimming, saunas, jacuzzis, or intense gym sessions. Additional procedures should not be considered until the area has fully healed, typically within 4 to 6 weeks. Once the area is completely healed (usually within 3 to 5 days), suggest using sunblock to prevent the pigment colour from fading.
Scalp Micropigmenation
Avoid picking or scratching the pigmented area during the healing process, as this may cause fading. It's normal to experience some peeling after a few days, so there's no need to worry. Itching may also occur, which is simply another sign of healing.
In the first four days: Take a hands-off approach—refrain from shaving, rinsing, scrubbing, or touching the area with your hands. Avoid intense exercise or activities that induce sweating, and keep the area dry, avoiding sunlight exposure.
We suggest spraying hats and pillows with PURE4® to reduce bacteria getting into the treated area.
Days four to seven: Continue to avoid shampooing until day 7. When showering, gently rub shampoo over the skin without scrubbing, and pat the scalp dry afterward.
After 10 days: Resume your normal routine. You can now use the gym, follow your exercise regimen, wash your hair, and shave your head if necessary. However, remember that the area is still healing, so be gentle with the treated area.
Facial Feature Enhancements
Brows and lips require special attention during the initial 24-hour period following micropigmentation. It's crucial to allow the skin to breathe during this time. Any lymphatic fluid can be gently removed using clean, sterile gauze and PURE4®. Dappen the gauze and pat with a dabbing motion to ensure minimal disturbance to the freshly pigmented area.
After the initial 24 hours, a consistent aftercare routine is essential for optimal healing and pigment retention. Here's a breakdown of recommended aftercare based on different skin types:
• Dry Skin: For clients with dry skin, it's recommended to apply aftercare product 3-4 times a day to keep the area moisturised and aid in the healing process.
• Normal to Combination Skin: Clients with normal to combination skin should apply aftercare product 2-3 times a day to maintain moisture, balance and support healing.
• Oily Skin: Those with oily skin should apply aftercare product 1-2 times a day to prevent excess oil buildup while still providing essential moisture for healing.
Consistency is key in aftercare routine to ensure the best results and minimise the risk of complications. Encourage your clients to follow these guidelines diligently to promote proper healing and long-lasting pigment retention.
